How to get zero data retention in Claude

Zero data retention lives on Anthropic’s API, not in the Claude app. The Claude Team and Enterprise apps are not eligible, and Enterprise admins can only choose how long chats are kept. To get it on the API, an organization applies through Anthropic’s sales team and is reviewed case by case, against criteria Anthropic does not publish. Without it, API prompts and outputs are kept for up to 30 days.

With Harriet, your teams use Claude with zero data retention set up as part of the rollout, on EU-hosted Claude, with no application of your own.

If you already have a ZDR agreement with Anthropic, bring your own keys and it carries over.

Zero data retention questions

What is zero data retention (ZDR)?
Zero data retention is an agreement with an AI provider that your prompts and the model’s outputs are not stored once the response is returned. Without it, Anthropic and OpenAI keep API inputs and outputs for up to 30 days.
Does Claude have zero data retention?
On the API, yes, once Anthropic approves your organization. Claude Team and Claude Enterprise are not eligible. Through Harriet, your teams use Claude with zero data retention available, without an application of your own.
Which Claude models does it cover?
The Claude models Anthropic makes eligible for ZDR, hosted in the EU. Anthropic keeps some newer models and features outside ZDR, and we tell you which before rollout.
Does ChatGPT have zero data retention?
ChatGPT Enterprise does not. OpenAI offers ZDR on eligible API endpoints for approved organizations. Through Harriet, ZDR covers Anthropic models today.
Is anything still kept?
Anthropic keeps safety classifier results and flagged content to enforce its usage policy. Connected tools follow their own retention rules, which is why Harriet shows where each one sends data before it is switched on.
Is “we do not train on your data” the same thing?
No. Training is about what the provider learns from your data. Retention is about whether a copy of it exists on the provider’s systems at all.
Does Claude Code have zero data retention?
Yes, when Claude Code runs on a commercial API key covered by an approved ZDR agreement. Claude Code on Claude Enterprise has its own ZDR offering for qualified accounts, which Anthropic enables separately.
Does Gemini have zero data retention?
Google describes it as something you reach by switching things off. You request an exception from abuse monitoring, keep request and response logging off, and avoid grounding with Google Search, which keeps query logs for up to three days.
Is “zero day retention” the same thing?
Yes. Zero day retention, zero retention, and ZDR all describe the same arrangement, where the provider keeps no copy of your prompts or outputs once it replies.
How do we set up zero data retention for AI agents?
It takes two parts. ZDR on the model, and control over what each connected tool keeps. Through Harriet, Claude runs with ZDR available, every connector shows where it sends data before a team can turn it on, and every tool call is logged.
Is it the same as GDPR compliance?
No. It removes one risk, the provider holding copies of your data. Where processing runs and who sees personal data matter too, which is why Claude is EU-hosted and the arrangement is set out in our DPA and sub-processor list.
